Bird Herd

Obsessed. That's exactly how I feel about birds. Here's the evidence. I sketched a crapperific little brown thrasher for my den. I drooled over my mom's christmas bird decor...well not literally because it would ruin the ornaments. And I even bought a little white ceramic birdie even though it gave me the stank eye. So I am officially obsessed. Therefore, you can bet your bottom dollar that when I saw a trio of birds at my local antique store, I was flyin high. They were so cute, I think I even mumbled 'cock-a-doodle-doo-hoo-hoo-hoo!'

Wanna meet my chicklets? Ok - introducing Mr. Blue...Mr. Blue Bird. Yes. He is white. Let's not let racial prejudice get in the way here.

Say Hi to Lady. Lady Bird. Yes, she likes wildflowers :)

And finally Larry. You guys can figure that one out :) He can really fly for a white guy.

Their tiny little birdie bodies are perfect for just a smidgen of chic (or chick) accent in our den. And because they are all white, they really pop against the dark grain of the bookcases as well as stay well within the bounds of non-gaudy animal sculptures guidelines. C'mon. This ain't the Neverland Ranch.

Even scattering the little feathered friends around the room allow the trio to seem less like a set of triplets and more like individual accent pieces. And don't parents of (coughJohn&Katecough) multiples usually want their own space anyway?

Larry is taking centerstage on this stack of neutral bound books over on the other side of the room. And speaking of having birds on every side of the small space, let's talk about themes for a moment. Even though the den definitely has a theme of birds throughout...the birds aren't overwhelming because they are subtle in size, with very little color variation (they are all white) and they are now reached their max in number.

And if I ever get tired of the avian theme - I could remove them without changing the basics of the room such as furniture, major art, or color scheme. I am also sure that these three would be never get stuck in the yard sale pile - seeing as how they would be a cinch to store and would be just darling used as decor at an Easter brunch buffet or a ladies tea party. Definitely $5 well spent for the trio.

Going along with the birdie theme is this structural little white-washed birdhouse that I also picked up for $5. Seeing as how I didn't need to do a thing to it (love the patina), I thought that the cutesy little thing would be a perfect way to play on the theme without adding another bird into the room.

I love how the clean lines of my bird 'church' seem to bring out the best in the reflective mirrors hung above them. And how Larry appears to have escaped the cage and looks to be taking flight...GO LARRY GO!

Well, there you have it - one trio of birdieboops and one birdcage. Dontcha just love getting new pets that don't poop, eat or die? I do.

So what do you think? Good purchases or too many hens in the house? Also, I thought I got a pretty good deal but do you think the price was fowl? Also, my dear bloggie friends (Anon that means you!), pray with all your might that my mom will sell me her bamboo birdcage....this good egg wants it for above the fridge and I am sure that with a few extra prayers, God will change her heart. (Sorry Mom...I can't help but play dirty. P.S. You are one hot spring chicken!)

I love them. I have a thing for birds myself and I would have purchased these 3 charmers as well. I think the price was great.

I also have a wood bird house that sits on our hearth. <3 it!

I love that wooden bird house! Perfect dimensions.

Plus the price for everything was great!

Are those photo albums on the second shelf from the bottom? I have been searching high and low for good neutral photo albums. Any hints?

I think they are all fantastic and I am green with envy! And had to laugh at "Go, Larry, go!" ROFL

Hey Anon!

Yupperonie...on the second to the bottom shelf are Pottery Barn photo albums. I got them at the outlets in North Georgia.

hmmm...where to get photo albums? That's a doozie. Maybe you should try googling them or if worse comes to worse, buy cheap ones and recover with your fabric of choice and some spray adhesive. Good luck!

I too am a white ceramic bird addict. Martha (oh how I love/hate her) had the cutest ceramic bird ornaments last Christmas. I picked up the cardinal & blue bird.

Love, love, love the birdies. Adore the birdcage! I love that it's "themey" without being "themey". Perfection as always!

I too LOVE birds! In fact, I think sometimes I go overboard :)

I just bought a rather large sized wicker bird from Pier 1 at 90% off for $1.68 in their Easter section- SCORE. Not exactly sure what I will do with it, but nevermind the details... I now own a gigantic bird- just add it to the collection!

Love the birds and the fab birdcage too! Your house is simply lovely!!

To comment on where to get photo albums... Kolo (kolo.com) has wonderful photo albums and scrapbooks in all shapes, sizes, fabrics and colors... they really look great, are very durable, hold lots of pics AND you can usually find coupons for them online. I'd check out their main website to see what you like and then go to dickblick.com or Sam Flax where you can get them as well, sometimes for less, and are able to use a coupon... just a thought! Hope it helps!

I haven't commented before, but I've been following your blog for a few weeks now. You are hilarious and your house is beautiful. I like all things white, so definitely love your birds.

By the way, I also live in Atlanta! Any recommendations on good thrift/antique stores or flea markets with great finds?

love the birds! too cute! i have one very similar to those, and two other birdies in my living room.

I love birds as well! And branches, for some reason. It's a whole tree/avian thing. My husband laughs at me because whenever we go to a store, I am immediately drawn to either birds or branches on various household items.

Where did you get the trio?

Jenny @ Words on Wendhurst said...

Loving the birds, not loving the "church" :-) I say let your little birdies have center stage. :-)

I guess home decor is for the birds! YAY!

Anon - I burn with jealousy.

Amanda - I am sure you will think of something awesome to do with it - I gotta check that out asap!

Carla - thanks for answering that one!

CarrieD Away - First, very clever name. Second, love the napkin rings...I would buy four white finches and pair with some fun colors for a island feel :) Or maybe I could just suggest that Jeremy do that for me :) jk honey!

CLB - I would hit up any and all thrift stores/goodwills in your area...since the stock constantly changes, you never know what you will find. Also, there is Scott's flea and if you are willing to drive a bit, then hit up Pendergrass for their fab flea market. Other than that...visit some antique stores - most in our area carry about five antiques and then just resell various stuff. Happy Shopping!

Mary - I found the trio and the birdcage in a local antique store...it's called Ally's Antiques and everytime I make the trip, I find something fabulous!

Love them - and not just because I favor triplets (former nanny of trips:-). I too, have become smitten with birds. I keep thinking of ways to incorporate them into my home decor and they've recently infultrated my preschool classroom on our bulletin board this month :-) And the price - very tweet. Yes, I went there.

They are perfect. I am a bird-obsessed decorator too. Completely.

Larry Bird! I get it.

Love the white birds. Larry is my fav! I wish I knew where I could find some for my bookshelves. By the way, I sent an email to you recently...just wondering if you received it.

I'm not gonna lie - birds freak me out. But they look so much less intimidating in white ceramic. This might be a new way to appreciate those winged creatures.

I too love birds that are white, and don't squak, poop, or die. Yes, I have two darling white ceramic lovebirds that play almost kissy in my master bath. They make me happy. And both were a buck each. It's the simple things. :-)

Love Larry - he is pretty fly.

Really really love the bird cage. I've been trying to find one that I can bring home, too. If you spy another one, pick it up for me, k? =)

I adore all things birdy: decor, real birds, artwork.....except for the avian flu.

And holy birds of a feather, batman, I LOVE those mirrors and that vintage-y birdcage!! You've got a gift for vignettes, Katie.

FYI-I've seen small, white ceramic bird salt and pepper shakers at Target.

Where did the white vase on the right side of your bookcase come from!?!? I want it badly!!! Thanks!

Hugs, Aimee

PS I found the cutest white bird house EVER at Joann's fabric store. Do you have one near you!? Totally you should check it out, kay!

Katie said...

Hi Aimee! The white vases on the top of the bookshelves are from Ikea. On the shelves, the bulbus urn came from HomeGoods and the white cylindrical vase came from Goodwill.

Hope this helps! Happy vase shopping!
