Happy JCrew...err....Earth Day!

Today is Earth Day. And obviously earth = oceans = water = kayaking = crew = JCrack. It's like six degrees to Kevin Bacon...except with Jcrew. It only takes six stages to get me from any other thought in the world to thinking about the addictive retail shop. Don't judge me, you know you do it too. And I recycle like Leo, so there!

Here is my shame on display. I created rooms from three outfits.

1. couch - IKEA
2. curtains - IKEA
3. art - allposters
4. coffee table - coffeetablesgalore
5. rug - overstock
6. pillow - target
7. pillow - pier1
8. ghost chair - allmodern

1. sofa - crate&barrel
2. curtains -IKEA
3. art - IKEA
4. chair - IKEA
5. pillow - westelm
6. rug - westelm

1. pillows - potterybarn
2. chair - target
3. rug - shadesoflight
4. table - jcpenney
5. sofa - potterybarn
6. curtains - westelm

So after you come down from your J-high, which one is more your style? Do tell. It'll make this earthling very happy :)

Sales & Specials 09.26.08

You know the drill. Here is the deals that will make you scream louder than you did last night (when Jim and Pam got engaged!)...AHHHH!

1. Chainlink Vinyl Shower Curtain - Pottery Barn $13.99
Personally I dig the grey version but any color could add a splash of style into your bathroom. Perfect for a college abode or a kids suite to add flare combined with the easy to clean vinyl. I would even go so far to say that it would look quite dashing as a tablecloth for your next outdoor party.

2. Jamison Club Chair - Target $149
Microfiber is your friend. Why? Cause it is easy to clean and takes a beating and keeps on ticking. This tan version from Target is surprisingly similar to the Pottery Barn Spencer Armchair - but oh, $1150 cheaper....whatta deal, whatta deal.

3. PB Classic Stripe Pillow Covers - Pottery Barn $14.99 + free shipping
I am seriously considering getting a few of these in citrus for my living room just like Emily. I love the classic lines, the price, the nautical feel, the price, the free shipping...did I mention the price? And the great thing is that you can get the innerds for cheap at IKEA (for all you non-sewing types) and the overall price will be less than a pillow at Walmart.

4. Dane Pendant Lamp - Crate & Barrel $64.95
Brazilian sandalwood veneer shade is a throw back and a jump forward all in one. This natural forest-y pendent would bring the outdoors in placed in a modern cabin or a retro loft. It screams style and at 50% off, the only question is - why WOOD you not buy it?!?

5. Wire Balls - CB2 $3.95-$4.95
Handwoven goodness of IRON. Place them in a bowl on your coffee table, stack in a large vase, hang from the ceiling or use as side table flare. They look fantastic and individualistic - and the price is not gonna push your budget way outta whack.

6. Lollylane Modern Ceiling Light - Walmart $14
Sure it was designed to go with a childrens room - but imagine getting a few for over a dining room table, a playroom reading area, or even flanking your TV in your IKEA adorned home. The design is simple, whimsical and fun - interpret as you will. Are they little trees, mini dandelions or lollipops? Who knows and who cares! We just know they are charming.

7. Lemonade Carafe - World Market $4.98
Wedding tables would look a little country, a little refreshing, and a whole lotta fabulous with these lemonade carafes. Serve your next patio party, summer time picnic or parched guests from this green glass pitcher. It is sure to charm if paired with some of your canning jars turned glasses.

8. Sumersault Blooming Delight Rug - Walmart $18
The colors and the price are darling for a closet rug, a bath rug or a children's time out mat. Not only does this rug look fantastic on the floor but also in other areas of your home - case in point - use it to cover a bench top for a furry and fun cover. Or attach some loops to make a textiley wall hanging for the babies to stare and then later rub all over. oooh - fuzzy.

9. Shanghai Pitcher - Z Gallerie $14.89
Square etchings make this porcelain pitcher to die for. It looks beachy, Asian, high end and functional to boot. Makes me wanna serve lemonade on the back patio. And at 50% this would make a great hostess gift at the next holiday party - about the same price as a decent bottle of wine - and I promise she won't use just once!

10. Nobility Safari Bath Rugs - Dillards $19
Exotic flavor for your bathroom ahead. Too much and you'll think you are at the zoo but add one chic bath rug and all of a sudden you just turned your boring trip to the bathroom into a luxurious African safari. Granted they aren't on sale - but I thought they were too fabulous to not share.

11. Essential Home Faux leather Parsons Chair - Kmart $39.99
Kmart? Katie's Mart that is. Cause these chair designs are fantastic - even Restoration Hardware thinks so. And the price is even better. I drool over prices like this. And then I have to change shirts.

12. Christmas Morning Hemstich Table runner - Linen's N Things $7.49
It is never too soon to shop for Christmas and today is no exception. This runner would look darling down the middle of your next Holiday party buffet. The matching 4-ct. napkin set is also available at the same price for you matchy-matchies. And this pattern is simple enough to add a little homie-ness to any contemporary home.

13. Whole Home Solid Color Dinnerware Collection - Sears $7.75-17.99 for four packs
This price is ridiculous for stoneware that look like it should be adorning the likes of a Southern Living magazine cover. It is not only sturdy but stylish. This is the kinda dinnerware that glass front cabinets were made for. If you buy this and have a fiesta - can I come?

14. Scroll Bird Lampshade - Urban Outfitters $14.99
I know I posted two lampshade pendants but this one was so charming I could help it! Flocked bird pattern set against a white background can add interest in your next black and white room. And $9 off the original price helps too. It will really pop when paired with a spicy red wall or some hot pink pillows.

And for those of you that are new - welcome to Bower Power. Here lives the dollar saving, penny pinching, sales loving gal that would love for you to keep a bit more of your moolah while increasing the FAAHH-boulousness of your home. And if you come across any great internet sales or specials - post them in the comments to share with my other 8 readers.

Sales & Specials 09.19.09

It's shopping time! And Bower Power has the best deals to share with all nine of you...that's right...I counted. Nine of you, on 09.19.09. Will you pay full price if with the help of Bower Power? Nein. (that's no in German but it is pronounced like "nine" - get it?)

All cheesiness aside, I really found some great deals and hopefully you will be able to incorporate some of these into your own personal designs and save some cash too. Cause let's be honest - who doesn't like to save money?!?

1. Chesapeake Director's Chair Frame & Slipcover - Pottery Barn $28.98

This adorable director's chair is totally kid-friendly and fashionable. No more ugly beach chairs for my tween - especially at this price. The greatest part is that the slipcover can be thrown in the wash so it's good to go even after the little ones accidentally spill sauce at your next barbeque.

2. IGLOO Maxcold 40-qt Wheeled Cooler - Target $26

We need a cooler something fierce. And now is the perfect time to buy because Target has all their IGLOOs on sale. Now that it's football season you can tote your 56 nice and frosty cans of brew to your next tailgate party and come summer - you will be ready to hit the beach with coolness on wheels.

3. Label Hardware - Pottery Barn $3 ($20 for set of 6)

What a creative way to personalize your kitchen, office, or laundry room! Attach these bin pulls to drawers in a play room so that the little ones can identify wooden boxes for easy clean up. I think they would be devine for spicing up an old filing cabinet or built-ins storing your thousands of DVDs.

4. Sater 2.5 seat split leather sofa - IKEA $299

One of the best deals ever found is this great looking sofa. Just trendy enough for the young but clean lines make it a lasting piece in your home. I love the high legs with a hardwood floor and some super plush pillows. And these days - a 2.5 seater means that it will fit two normal size people just fine - that or six Renee Zellwegers and an Angelina - heck throw in two Angelinas.

5. Walnut Finish lingerie chest, 4-drawer chest or nightstand - Kmart $30

The prices speaks for itself. FYI - these are only available at this price through tomorrow!

6. Midtown Dining Chairs set of 2 in Maple Finish - Walmart $69.88

Sleekness gets a rollback at Walmart. These are actually cheaper than their cousins at IKEA...and we all know how hard it is to be cheaper than the big blue Scandinavians. I think these would look great gathered around a glass table with punchy blue accents.

7. Kassett DVD box with lid in white - IKEA $3.99 for two

These lovely boxes are my favorite. And you can use them as storage for just about anything. No, they won't hold bricks or anything ridiculously heavy but they do their job. And right now they are two for the price of one! So put em in every room of your house!

8. Metal & Glass Cylinder Lanterns - Pier 1 $1.98-$2.98

Originally 8 and 12 bucks, these simple and stylish lanterns could add romance to any setting at a quarter of the cost. Hang from a tree, a shepherd's hook, gazebo, line a path, place on a table, or use as favors at your next shower or birthday party. Perfect for weddings and more!

9. Spode "Baking Days" Dinnerware Collection - Macy's $7.99-$50.40

Since I spilled the beans about my OCDD - you know I am trying to come up with a good excuse to go to Macys. This collection is ADORABLE. Comes in four different colors - red, baby blue, black and lime. I especially adore the individual remekins - perfect in red for Christmas, 4th of July, and Valentines day.

10. Defiant Satin Nickel Deadbolt/Entry Combo Lockset - Home Depot $20

Home Depot has some GRREEEEAAT prices on all things home improvement. Everything you would need to renovate a basement, put up a fence, and change even the most minor of home elements. And remember if you find it for a lower price, Home Depot will match it and beat it by 10% (check their website for more details).

11. Billy Bookcase in Black-Brown - IKEA $60

Everyone loves a little more storage and these bookcases should do just the trick. And marked down from $80 makes this a little more affordable. Only during this weekend will you get these fantastic IKEA prices...so rush...run...push the little old lady outta the way...do whatcha gotta do...just go!

And if you lovely nine find any other appealing pricing events - please let me know ASAP! This girl gotta run - but good luck - and if it is you that I accidentally ram at IKEA, well, all's fair in love and shopping!

My Moody Room Moodboard

The dressing room is my little safe haven...free from football or xbox or crusty armpitted shirts. I do have a terrible towel or two in there (go steelers!) but for the most part, it is my escape from the boy. Don't worry - he has a work room, and did I mention cable?!?! Anyway.

I have ALWAYS had a large collection of clothing. (please note that most do not fit right now - more about that later) but ever since I was a tween, I had the innate ability to collect and store ridiculous amounts of apparel. Women are gatherers right? And boy, did I gather.

So, when we bought this big beautiful house - with four bedrooms and a basement screaming for remodeling, Jeremy gave me a precious gift. He got the walk in closet and I got a bedroom...to store clothes. My good friend, Julia appointed it "the dressing room".

This dressing room has seen its share of ups and downs. When we first moved in, Jeremy literally took everything I owned from my parents house and shoved it into this room. If something got caught in the way, it was packed in there too. After we organized it, I felt like I had a whole new wardrobe. That was an excellent day.

So now, I am at a crossroads. I want this to be a dressing room...but I also want to be able to lounge and read and house an occasional overnight guest in there as well. And sure, we have a guest bedroom...and not so many guests. But when it rains, it pours. And on top of all that - I need a moody room. A place to just let my attitude get some breathing room. A place where I can be cranky. A place where I can play dress up. And a place where Jer can't see me slipping my "hottie dress" on over my uber-restrictive beige colored undergarments. I think it would help our marriage (not that you have anything to worry about - just helping keep the romance alive, people!)

First thing I need is a plan.

  • I need to get rid of pare down on the clothing and shoes that doesn't fit.

  • I need to only buy stuff that is ON the moodboard or substitute for a moodboard item.

  • I need to toss old, stained, or ugly clothing.

  • I need to stick to the plan.

Here is my plan for the room -

1 - Mark this sucker off the list - I already have the drapes. Curtesy of Ikea.

2 - Ikea is my go to store - and since the wardrobers are the only thing in the moodroom...we could totally feel at ease getting a matching chest. I still have to do a bit of measuring but this 6-drawer version could probably fit in somewhere...and provide a bit more storage.

3 - I love Etsy. And I think this hand felted alpaca pillow is fantastic. It is handmade by a little shop called FeltedStyle's and I love it. Don't love the price. But love the pillow.

4 - The overlapping squares daybed is just square enough to be hip. I love this bed - I will take it in white please or brown will do - but either way - please be mine! It looks like a lounger and functions like a bed. Wowee! And I am committed to this thing...I already bought the bolsters. Now I just need the bed, matress and mattress cover.

5 - Ikea again. I put this fabulous flower photo in but there are numerous options - like this one and this one and this one and this one and these. All fabulous.

6 - WAHOO - WHAT?! WHAT??! WOO WOO! celebrate with me! this fab light is already mine!! shake your toosh - watch yourself!

7 - This antique bronze pendant table lamp makes me smile. Its like the Shirley Temple of lamps with an adorable price tag as well.

8 - The laundry room is downstairs. Most of the laundry is upstairs and on the floor. We don't have hampers. That is why this cute laundry bag with stand from Ikea made the cut. I could fit three of them in Jeremy's closet and maybe even one in mine? And the case of the dirty towels is solved.

9 - I got Pax wardrobes from Ikea - and I can not wait to buy the fabulous doors. Only problem with that is the price - they are a pretty penny - $110 for one door plus the cost of knobs or handles.

10 - This pale pink is already painted - but I probably could touch it up. It is the only room in the house that is pink and will stay that way. It helps the mood.

Ok - so while I am dreaming about that West Elm daybed, tell me the dish on where you go to get your funk out...your moodroom...your escape from it all. Is it the bathtub with the door locked...cause that is my runner up...ok, spill it...

Sales & Specials 09.05.08

Wahoo! Sales & Specials time! And it's Friday! Double Wahoo!

Here we go folks - the best of the best - the gravy in your mashed potatoes - the cheapo of the thrifty finds that still look good. Oh and that is really important to keep in mind - I sift through a lot and I mean, A LOT of crap to find home decor items that are actually decent for you and your home. And the following list has several items that I would looove to add to my own abode.

Capiz Circles Pendant Lamp in mocha - West Elm $59.99

Pause salt & pepper shaker set - Crate & Barrel $10.95

George Foreman Indoor/Outdoor electric grill - Walmart $54.96

Camille Lounger - Pottery Barn $299.99

Aria Braid Rug Runner - JCPenney $24.99

Delaney Bookcase in white - Target $69

Egg Plate - Crate & Barrel $17.95

Stricks Sconce - ZGallerie $14.89

Heritage Collection 3-in-1 Convertible Crib in Natural - Kmart $99.99

That sleek s&p set would make me proud to shake it like a salt shaker! That's what I gotta say!

And the Foreman grill is the most economical choice now that it's football season cause it doesn't run on the four dollar a gallon gas that we love.

FYI - the Delaney collection is all on sale at Target right now and it would be so darling for a little girls sanctuary.

And I couldn't resist posting the egg plate - I am always on deviled egg duty come holiday season so I thought that you also would like to be prepared :)

Hope you found something you can love on this list - but if not that's ok - tell me where you love to shop and I can keep my eyes peeled for some great deals.

Girl's Best Friend

Mrs. Five Camels tagged me...bling tagged me to be exact. And who doesn't love a good game of tag when jewels are involved.

Here goes - my delish Elizabeth Taylor inspired jewelry box of my dreams.

Crystal encrusted hoops
Flower diamond studs
Thick chain silver ring
Amethyst ring (it's my birthstone and it is sooo pretty)
Pink pearl studs
and lastly - the most important piece of frosting that I already own - my lovely engagement ring.
I would be perfectly happy knowing that the ring on my finger is the only bling I will ever own... as Bon Jovi once sang -
"Diamond ring - wear it on your hand - it's gonna tell the world - I'm your only man".

Sales & Specials 08.22.08

El Cheapo here - back and rearing to go! I'm here to make sure you have some more fantastic finds that are easy on the pocketbook. Do people even call them pocketbooks anymore? or is that a serious faux pas? I bet it's like calling the car an 'automobile'..."Honey - Let's go to the automobile wash & get a good swab!" Well that just sounded British...go ahead try it with an English accent - it's jolly fun :)

Back to the point - which is that here at Bower Power we are celebrating #2 of this weeks reasonably priced internet finds - it's
SALES & SPECIALS FRIDAY!!!
And without further ado - here is the leading light in our very British Sales & Specials - the moodboard of bargains that takes the biscuit:

Microfiber Storage Ottoman in Tan - Target $24.99
10" Bamboo Dinner Plate - Hamptons Greens Bamboo 8 for $8.80
Piped Coverlet in Green Apple in Queen - Pottery Barn $89.99
Jungle Appetizer Plate - CB2 $.95
Hayworth Decanter - Restoration Hardware $23.49
Faux leather Club Chair with matching ottoman - Big Lots $129.99 AHHH!
Xing Carved Stool - Pier 1 Imports $49.98
Trio Table Lamp - Walmart $20
8x10 Otis Rug - Crate & Barrel $199

I actually went to Target to check out the ottoman and it is what it appears. The tan color is much more appealing than the brown so keep that in mind if you are headed to Target.com. Also, at Target they have another storage ottoman on sale - featured in their Weekly deals. I couldn't find it at the store but it looks decent too. And it is under $20!

Moving on...

The bamboo plates are fabulous! I saw in BHG where they used them as chargers - el cheapo chargers - and they are consumer friendly for all you greenies out there!

And when it comes to that decanter - Let's just face the facts - Restoration Hardware is like totally super expensive. So to pay 24 bones for a glass water holder is pretty darn good. Plus you could add this to the guest room when friends come to visit and not only would they think - "Wow! My friend has got FANTASTIC taste but she also must love me cause I am getting totally pampered with such a gorgeous decanter!" Seriously - she will say it...just...like...that.

And FINALLY...

The club chair + ottoman + that price = Leg cramps as you knock over the little old ladies at Big Lots.

Have a grand time? Find you a steal or two? I sure hope so. And if you decide to incorporate any of SALES & SPECIALS items into your own abode - send me the pics - or throw me a comment so that I can jump up and down with you in thrifty celebration!

Sales & Specials 08.19.08

Due to a brief stint in California, I was unable to do last Friday's Sales & Specials. But no worries! I am back safe and sound and ready and willing to feature TWO Sales & Specials this week. I know what you are thinking - Katie, are there really that many great deals out there to put together TWO moodboards of fabulous finds?! Why yes my two lovelies, there are! So fasten your seltbelt and put your tray tables in the upright position - Here is #1 :)

And for those of you paying attention - that fab yellow chair that is like a ray of sunshine in our doom of gloom - yea - that one. It's no longer available. BUT this one is! And I think that with a quick coat of spray paint your new wicker will be totally tricked out. And for less than the cost of the Pottery Barn version.
This is the time for your input - stocking up on hand soap for usable and greatsmelling gifts? Want to show how to turn that etsy art into nursery decor? This is your chance - I would love to see how you incorporate any of the cheapo finds (past or present) into your own life!

Riddle Riddle in the Mall

What's black and white and fabulous all over? Forever 21 - that's what. I am a big fan of White House Black Market - but not of the steep price tags. Enter Forever 21. At a fraction of the price you can add beautiful B&W pieces to your own wardrobe. In fact, I betcha you could get a whole wardrobe at F21 for the price of one WHBM outfit...badda bing!

Here are my delectable finds -

my favs - the irony of the 'green' bag, the polka dot hat and the faux skin wallet

my gold stars - black leggings, the black peeptoes and the striped "hip-minimizing" skirt

I would take anything here - especially the cowl neck sweater or the first veined tunic - yum!

I want it all...please? Total wishlist criteria - be on the above group of tops :)

God bless Forever 21.

Sales & Specials 08.01.08

Here at Bower Power, sales and specials are very important to the overall economy of our household. I personally love them because of the following reasons:
  1. I feel overwhelmingly guilty when paying full price
  2. A sale means that my husband and I can buy food that week
  3. A sale also means that we don't have to sleep on the floor, sit on the floor, or eat off the floor (no offense to my floor)

Because a friend reprimanded me last night for not sharing the wealth of knowledge about such a useful subject - aka a sale - I have decided to introduce a new feature here at Bower Power - SALES & SPECIALS. So each and every Friday be sure to check back in to see what other treasures I have discovered at low low prices.

Elana Headboard - World Market $99.50
Ikal Placemats - CB2 $1.95 each
Tonally Mod Dinnerware - Pier 1 Imports $2.48-$2.98
Nautical Rope Accent Table - Pottery Barn $99
Textured Stainless Bath Accessories - Crate & Barrel $4.95-$9.95
Solid Jersey Sheet Set in Brown - Target $13.99 (ANY SIZE!!!)

and my bonus sale item this week is featured at West Elm - it is their wood beaded window panels. Only $35 for a set of two panels that are 108" long! Perfect for layering and infusing a feeling of vacationing in Bali. (I totally want to go there one day!) These sheer linen window coverings can add privacy while allowing light to enter a dim space.

So you interested? Go check em out. In fact, check out all the sale items and if you discover one of your own - let me know for next Friday!

Penney's Saves BIG Bucks

I brainstormed last night to the sound of gunfire. Was I in the ghetto? no. Was I watching a cool new movie? no. Was I in the comfort of my own home? Yes - the boyfriend was playing what I call Badge of Honor - I think most refer to it as Call of Duty 4. I can never remember the name. I do try to be nice and not smash the game in half when I have a headache complain, but honestly - can't they make the sound effects a little less realistic?!

Anyway - I brainstormed about all the lovely things to make our newlywed chamber a bit more like "oh-what-a-lovely-master-suite" rather than "oh-I-see-you-have-a-bed-in-this-room".

So here are the additional items that I found at Target & JCPenney. Who woulda thunk that Penney's had such purty items!?!

I want to cover the entire wall behind our bed with creamy floor to ceiling drapes. point-Designer showhouse. Then have some wall sconces peak out above the dark wood nightstands and place the Target chair in the corner with the BB&B pillow. Maybe later I can post pics of our currently uber-blah bedroom. Do you think it will go with my current Master bedroom wish list?

Posh Room Moodboard

Moodboard for the ladies in a luxurious mood. I would love to have this room in my house! But it would probably fit better in a Brooklyn Limestone.

Little Boys Room Moodboard

Wouldn't this just be divine for a little boy's room? I was totally inspired by my little nephew Cole. And Tom Sawyer.

Katharine Hepburn - Fashion Icon

Who wore the pants in Hollywood? It was Katharine Hepburn.

During a time of dresses, skirts, high heels, and sex appeal, the "Great Kate" was a nonconformist. She was true to herself - believing that she didn't actually have sex appeal and therefore would dress how she felt comfortable. That meant pants. Always with the pants. She even won an award from Council of Fashion Designers of America in 1986 for her menswear-inspired style.

Her favorites were men's trousers, loose fitting button down shirts, and loafer style shoes.

And now I dedicate this moodboard to the lady of the Oscars - Katharine Hepburn.

Check it out - you can buy all the goods on this moodboard for your own Kate outfit. They are available through the Banana Republic/Gap/Piperlime chains - Go on...get your shop on!

Style File - Indian & Moroccan

Abraham Lincoln once said
"My great concern is not whether you have failed,
but whether you are content with your failure."

And I admit, I am a bit intimidated by all the excellent designers that blog about room design. ok...a whole ton intimidated. But failing to try to design, or failing to try to do anything is the real crime. This fear has lurked in the back corner since 8th grade when I didn't make the middle school basketball team. And even now, I get so worked up about what other people think of my attempt that I would rather not put myself out there.

So, today I am probably going to have a mediocre design - however, it is the best I can do in the short time available. And I did grab hold of some Bower Power - which always has a way of giving me strength (try it!). Also, just to be clear - this blog is for me - and I hope you readers blog for yourselves. Because in the end, your opinion is the only one that matters.

So enough of all that - on to the nitty gritty. This is the first entry of what I am introducing as
STYLE FILES.
A Style File is just as the name implies. A comgloberation of all things that I have noted particular to a certain theme, area, culture, or era. I will make notes for certain areas of design and if you ever decide to change a room, a hall, or your whole house then you can use this guide as a resource for your new decor. Also, I will create a moodboard so you can see how I interpret that style for life today.

Oh say can you see?

I am very proud to be an American. Sure we make mistakes, sure we are loud and obnoxious, sure we like to super-size everything but in the end America gives me the right to be a free person with a will and moral courage to make changes. And if those changes be paint color or furniture arrangements - well, God as my witness, I will try.

So Sweet Land of Liberty, I dedicate this moodboard to you.

Reese Witherspoon - Fashion Icon

Reese is exactly the type of gal Hollywood needs - classy, southern, fashionable, and funny. Oh yeah and she's a decent actor. The pic below is when she was fabulously featured in Elle Magazine. But here is some inspiration so you (if you have buckets of money) can be a little piece of Reese.

I hope this inspires you Legally Blonde, brunette, and redheads to get out there, buy some Rendition of your own Witherspoon-like duds, and catch a Gyllenhaal of your own! And you girls that already have a stud - don't be afraid to step into Pleasantville and Walk the fine Line of fashion that will have all those southern boys yelling, SWEET HOME ALABAMA!
